The Untold Secrets of ADHD Parenting

Let’s face it, being the parent of a child with ADHD is not a walk in the park. ADHD Parenting can often have you on your knees and pulling your hair in frustration. Of course, being a parent would always bring moments of frustration but with when you are rearing a child suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, you need more patience and you have to be more understanding of your child’s condition. ADHD is not a 24-hour bug that just goes away after a couple of medications and home remedies. It is a condition that lasts for a lifetime in a lot of cases.

So, here are the secrets to ADHD Parenting:

ü  Patience is the key. A positive outlook and a positive attitude towards taking care of your child will help to keep you patient and understanding. Always keep in mind that your child is not intentionally misbehaving. Believe in your child and know that he can change, behave and mature. Never lose hope that your child would overcome his condition. Do not sweat over the little things and take a break as much as you can. Stressing too much will make you feel even more irritable and short tempered. You are not alone in this and if you need help, you should not be afraid to ask for it.

ü  Structure and consistency pave the way to your child’s growth. Create a schedule for your child to follow and stick to it. Make sure that the schedule is simple and not overloaded with stuff for your child to do. Ensure that your child gets enough time to rest and sleep. Add quiet activities to the schedule before your child goes to sleep such as reading a book or drawing pictures. Your child needs to have a predictable environment wherein he would know what to expect. Provide a quiet area for your child to wind down and have some alone time. Keep your house as neat and organized as you possibly can. ADHD parenting involves being able to provide a safe, calm and consistent environment for your child.

ü  Positive reinforcement helps. Praise and encouragement are vital weapons that you have to be armed with. Whenever your child does something worthy of your praise and attention, give it to him as it will encourage him to repeat that behaviour. As for the consequences of breaking the rules that were clearly set, you can send your child on a time out or take away some of his privileges such as TV time. Remember to be consistent especially when you are reinforcing your rules. ADHD parenting needs you to be assertive.

Now, you know the secrets of ADHD parenting. Always remember these things and you will have an easier time dealing with your child’s condition.
